Holidays in Spain

Offering high temperatures, beautiful landscapes and great food just a short flight away from the UK, it’s no wonder Spain has been one of the top holiday destinations for Brits for generations. Spanish holidays even managed to remain popular during the worst periods of the recession, when many cash-strapped Brits chose to holiday at home, and the sheer wealth of opportunities offered by this Mediterranean nation will doubtless ensure its popularity for many years to come.

Even if you’ve been to Spain before, you may have only scratched the surface of what the country has to offer, so it’s well worth considering venturing outside of your comfort zone and visiting lesser known areas with fewer tourists – especially as this could save you money too, compared to staying at more expensive hotels and resorts.

While the big cities of Madrid and Barcelona are enduringly popular and offer an abundance of attractions, you could enjoy a more authentic Spanish experience by heading to some of the smaller towns nearby. These include Cadaques and Sitges, both just a short trip from Barcelona, and the less touristic Benicasim and Cadiz, where you’ll be able to mix with the locals and enjoy some of the finest food in the country.

Of course, where you decide to go in Spain could also be dictated by the type of activities you’re hoping to enjoy on your Spanish holiday. If you’re looking forward to long days spent on the beach, the Canary Islands could be ideal, while water sport enthusiasts may prefer the Balearics. The party island of Ibiza is also a major draw for younger travellers, who may find the clubs of beach resorts on the mainland a little lacking. However, if it’s history and culture you’re interested in, you’ll find more to see and do in the big cities – especially Barcelona with its numerous excellent museums and galleries.

There are many ways to save money on your holidays in Spain too, so you can enjoy a great vacation without breaking the bank. Travelling off-peak is one of the easiest ways to slash holiday costs, and Spain’s climate is generally warm at many times of the year, especially in the south, so you won’t have to sacrifice the sunshine either. Opting for budget accommodation rather than all-inclusive hotels could also help your travel money stretch much further on your Spanish holiday, and comparing prices online is often a way to bag the best deals.
